Description

This antique Italian farmhouse table has handy pull-out draw leaf extensions.  The top is a beautifully grained light walnut while the turned walnut legs have a darker stain, creating an interesting contrast.  The four legs are connected by an X stretcher.  As is typical of these farmhouse tables, the leaves are pine.  However, the craftsman of this table added a veneer of walnut around the edge of each draw leaf so the different wood would not be noticeable from the sides.

In Italy, farmhouse tables like this one doubled as work surfaces in the kitchen.  So as not to ruin the top of the table, the draw leaves were used as prep areas and were often made of less expensive woods such as pine. Also, pine was preferred to other woods with higher tannins which could affect the color and flavor of handmade pasta and bread.
